Rebecca Black (born June 21, 1997) is an American pop singer who gained worldwide attention with her 2011 single “Friday”. Her mother paid $4,000 to have the single and an accompanying music video put out as a vanity release through the record label ARK Music Factory. The song was co-written and produced by Clarence Jey and Patrice Wilson of ARK Music Factory. After the video went viral on YouTube and other social media sites, “Friday” was derided by many music critics and viewers, who dubbed it “the worst song ever.” The music video, uploaded to YouTube, has received more than 160 million views, causing Black to gain international attention as a “viral star”.

Early life

Rebecca Black was born on June 21, 1997, in Anaheim, California. She is the daughter of John Jeffery Black and Georgina Marquez Kelly, both veterinarians, and is of Spanish, Italian, Polish, and English descent. An honor student, Black studied dance, auditioned for school shows, attended music summer camps, and began singing publicly in 2008 after joining the patriotic group Celebration USA.

Music career

In late 2010, a classmate of Black and music-video client of ARK Music Factory, a Los Angeles label, told her about the company. Black’s mother paid $4,000 for Ark Music to produce her daughter’s music video while the Blacks retained ownership of the master. The single, “Friday”, written entirely by Ark, was released on YouTube and iTunes. The song’s video was uploaded to YouTube on February 10, 2011, and received approximately 1,000 views in the first month. The video went viral on March 11, 2011, acquiring millions of views on YouTube in a matter of days, becoming the most-talked-about topic on social networking site Twitter, and garnering mostly negative media coverage. As of June 14, 2011, the video had received more than 3,190,000 “dislikes” on YouTube compared to more than 451,000 “likes”. As of March 22, 2011, first-week sales of her digital single were estimated to be around 40,000 by Billboard. Black appeared on the March 22, 2011 episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, during which she performed the single and discussed the negative reaction to it. The song has peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 and the New Zealand Singles Chart at number 58 and 33, respectively. In the UK, the song debuted at number 61 on the UK Singles Chart.

In an interview with The Sun, Black said that she is recording a new song for possible release as a single. She is currently working without a record deal. She also said that she is preparing materials for her debut album at Flying Pig Productions studio in Los Angeles containing songs with themes similar to that of “Friday”, as she wants it to be “appropriate and clean.” Black teamed up with Funny or Die on April Fools Day (the site was renamed Friday or Die) for a series of videos, including one which addresses the controversy about the driving kids in her music video, stating “We so excited about safety.” She has also stated that she is a fan of Justin Bieber, and expressed interest in performing a duet with him.

In response to the YouTube video of “Friday”, Black began to receive death threats in late February 2011, specifically by phone and email. These threats are being investigated by the Anaheim Police Department.

In March 2011, Ryan Seacrest reportedly helped sign Rebecca to manager Debra Baum’s DB Entertainment.

MTV selected Rebecca to host its first online awards show, the O Music Awards Fan Army Party in April 2011.

As a homage to “Friday”, Black appears in the music video for Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, in which Black plays alongside Perry as the hostess of a party Perry attends.

“Friday” was also performed on the second season of Glee in the episode, “Prom Queen,” which originally aired May 10, 2011. When asked about why the song was covered on Glee, show creator Ryan Murphy replied, “The show pays tribute to pop culture and, love it or hate it, that song is pop culture.”

Black is set to release a self-produced single called My Moment on July 18, with an accompanying music video, as well as a digital 5-track EP in August.

Awards and nominations

In April 2011, the MTV O Music Awards, one of the annual awards established by MTV to honor the art, creativity, personality and technology of music into the digital space nominated “Which Seat Can I Take?” for “Favorite Animated GIF” that included footage by Rebecca Black featuring 50 Cent and Bert.

Popular culture

Black appears as herself in the music video of Katy Perry’s single “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”. She appears as the host of a party in the house next door to that of “Kathy Beth Terry”. At the end of the video Terry attempts to blame the excesses of the party (which had subsequently moved to her own house) on Black, only for her parents (Corey Feldman and Debbie Gibson) to disbelieve her.

She has since been repeatedly mentioned on the fictional Terry’s facebook and twitter pages, as well as during an in-character interview with DigitalSpy.

Britney caused a stir in 1999 with the American Family Association by posing in her underwear on the cover of Rolling Stone and also fought rumours of breasts implants the same year.

In the year 2000, she again created a stir at MTV Video Music Awards by dressing up in flesh colored outfit which made her look scantily clad. She also signed a contract with Pepsi to do their T.V commercials promoting their soft drink for $10,000 million upwards in 2001. In the same year she hosted the American Music Awards.

She has also starred in the movie CrossRoads released in March 2002 which did not do exceptionally well. Around the same time she also broke up with her boyfriend Justin Timberlake. She was voted as one Fun and Fearless female by Cosmopolitan magazine and as the Fourth Most Influential Person by the People magazine. Britney is also the most searched for name on the internet. Currently, she is at work on her fourth album slated to release by October 2003.

Sandra Bullock was born on July 26th, 1966, in Arlington, Virginia. Sandra is a veteran superstar actress. Sandra’s family moved back to the United States when she was around ten years old. Sandra was an ugly duckling, and was teased mercilessly by her schoolmates. Instead of becoming resentful however, she vowed she would never treat anyone the way she had been treated, and her generous and kind qualities manifest themselves in both her personal and professional lives.

She left the stage behind, though, working to fit in with her U.S. high school peers by taking on the ‘role’ of sunny cheerleader, but returned to drama in university, and ultimately left even that for a New York acting career.

After a stint at East Carolina University, Bullock took her sunny nature to New York, where she began concentrating on an acting career. The left handed, blue eyed beauty, Nicole Kidman, was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on June 20, 1967. The Kidmans lived in the U.S. because Nicole’s biochemist father was conducting research on breast cancer. Her father, Anthony Kidman, is author and assistant professor for psychology and biochemistry. Her mother, Janelle Kidman, is a nurse and a nursery-school teacher. Nicole is a member of one of Australia’s famous families. Her grandfather, Sir Sydney Kidman, was a big landowner and one of the continent’s biggest stockbreeder.

Once Nicole was 4 years old, her family moved to Australia, where Nicole and her younger sister were raised under strict rules. Anthony and Janelle Kidman were extremely politically active, and instilled certain values into their daughters.

Nicole felt extremely awkward and out of place while growing up. Although today her statuesque figure is part of her beauty, as a child her figure was not proportionate, and she stood at a lanky height compared to her classmates. Her pale complexion did not make matters any better for young Nicole. Nicole dropped out of high school when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in order to help her. At the same time, Kidman pursued her acting classes. Her mother finally recovered, but Nicole never returned to finish high school.

She participated regularly at the Philip Street Theater in Sydney, where future director Jane Campion, who was a film student at the time, was greatly impressed by Nicole’s acting abilities. Christina Aguilera was born December 18, 1980, in Staten Island, New York. She is the daughter of an Ecuadorian father, Fausto, and a Irish mother, Shelly. Julia Fiona Robert was born in the small-townish Atlanta suburb of Smyrna, Georgia, the daughter of a vacuum salesman and a church secretary on October 28, 1967. Her parents divorced when she was 4, and her father, with whom Roberts shared a deep attachment, died of cancer when she was just 9.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was born in Mumbles, a small fishing village near Swansea, Wales on 25th September 1969. Her name stems from two different grandmothers; one grandmother is named Catherine, while the other is Zeta, named after a ship Catherine’s grandfather sailed on. Her Irish mother was a seamstress and her Welsh father managed a candy factory. She became an accomplished singer and dancer at a young age due to her involvement with the local Catholic’s congregation amateur dramatic society.

At the age of 14 she went to London to audition for a part in the musical Bugsy Malone and there they recruited her for the touring production of the Pajama Game and took her off to London. At 17, Zeta-Jones nabbed the lead role in 42nd Street and once the show closed, Zeta-Jones traveled to France, where she received the lead role in French director Phillippe De Broca’s Scheherazade, her feature film debut.

In 1991 Catherine returned to England having been offered a role as Mariette Larkin in the new Yorkshire TV series The Darling Buds of May, an adaption of the H.E. Bates novel. The series also starred David Jason and was an immediate hit, turning Catherine into a U.K. superstar. Zeta-Jones became a tabloid favorite, constantly hounded by the paparazzi. Once the intrusiveness of the media became unbearable, she decided to take her life and career across the Atlantic.

In 1992, she also appeared as Maya in The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles and as Beatriz in Christopher Columbus: The Discovery. At this time she was in a long-term relationship with American producer Jon Peters, whose proposal of marriage was turned down by Catherine as she did not wish to simply become a “Hollywood wife”. More films followed like The Haunting, High Fidelity and then the block-buster Traffic in which she starred with her husband Michael Douglas.

In 1999 Catherine became romantically involved with actor Michael Douglas and in January 2000 they announced their engagement. On the 9th August 2000 Catherine gave birth their son, Dylan Michael Douglas, and they married later in November 2000. The married couple actually share the same birth date, albeit not the same year.

She also starred with Julia Roberts in America’s Sweethearts. And in 2003 she starred in another blockbuster Chicago with Richard Gere and Renee Zellwegger.

Tara Leigh Patrick (Carmen) was born on April 20, 1972 in White Oak, Ohio near Cincinatti. Carmen is of Cherokee, Irish, and German decent which explains her exotic skin colour. She got the name Carmen Electra because Prince told her she looked like a Carmen and she chose Electra for her last name after a Goddess.

At the age of five she entered in and won her first dance contest. At the age of 9, Carmen was chosen for the School of Creative and Performing Arts. While she was there she took singing lessons, and by her teenage years, she was dancing in musicals and doing her own choreographing for the school’s theater ensemble. She went on to be in over 100 tap and ballet contests.

At fifteen, she took her first big step and moved to Minneapolis, where her sister and half-sister lived. Four years later, she packed up shop and moved to L.A. One week later, she met the artist formerly known as Prince. For all practical purposes, she had just been discovered.

Despite the fact that Prince took her under his wing. Her first album was a dud. By 1993,Carmen’s success was the typical story of the flare that finally died. One year after her big break, the name Carmen Electra had been forgotten.

Brooke Christa Shields is the daughter of Frank Shields a Revlon executive and Teri Shields a former model born on May 31, 1965 in New York. Her grandfather was Francis Shields, a professional tennis player. Her grandmother, Marina Torlonia, was an Italian aristocrat, and through her Brooke can claim descent from Henri IV, King of France, Lucrezia Borgia, and Honore I, Prince of Monaco, among others. Her great-grandmother, Elsie Moore, was the sister of Glenn Close’s grandfather.

She, at the age of 11 months, was the Most Beautiful Baby in America for Ivory Snow soap advertisements and was a runway model by age three. After spending many years hawking products, she was in such demand that her mother started marketing her under the logo Brooke Shields & Co. Shields made her feature film debut in Alice Sweet Alice, 1976, but did not become a bona fide star until French director Louis Malle cast her as a 12-year-old New Orleans prostitute who becomes the romantic obsession of a much older painter in Pretty Baby, 1978. Her questionable nude scene at the age of 13 caused an uproar.

Her best-known film is The Blue Lagoon, 1980 in which she and teenage hunk Christopher Atkins find themselves shipwrecked for years on a desert island. Off-camera, the leggy actress saw a lot of turbulence in her personal life. She dated Liam Neeson, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Dean Cain, was engaged to tennis pro Andre Agassi after a much-publicized relationship and married in 1997, divorcing him in 1999.

Shields is author of two books, The Brooke Book and On Your Own. She has even taken to the stage, in a Broadway revival of Grease. She also continues to continues to lend her voice and support to issues involving children’s welfare and life-threatening diseases.

She is now married to TV writer Chris Henchy since April 2001, after her 2-year failed marriage to Agassi. Brooke was last seen in several guest appearances on Just Shoot Me, as well as the 2001 film After Sex, and the made-for-TV movies What Makes a Family and Widows.

Some of the ‘somethings’ she does have are charisma, highly photogenic beauty and driving ambition. And It all seems to be working very well.

Brooke’s reply to mature roles, offered to her when she was 15 years old:
