Rebecca Black (born June 21, 1997) is an American pop singer who gained worldwide attention with her 2011 single “Friday”. Her mother paid $4,000 to have the single and an accompanying music video put out as a vanity release through the record label ARK Music Factory. The song was co-written and produced by Clarence Jey and Patrice Wilson of ARK Music Factory. After the video went viral on YouTube and other social media sites, “Friday” was derided by many music critics and viewers, who dubbed it “the worst song ever.” The music video, uploaded to YouTube, has received more than 160 million views, causing Black to gain international attention as a “viral star”.

Early life

Rebecca Black was born on June 21, 1997, in Anaheim, California. She is the daughter of John Jeffery Black and Georgina Marquez Kelly, both veterinarians, and is of Spanish, Italian, Polish, and English descent. An honor student, Black studied dance, auditioned for school shows, attended music summer camps, and began singing publicly in 2008 after joining the patriotic group Celebration USA.

Music career

In late 2010, a classmate of Black and music-video client of ARK Music Factory, a Los Angeles label, told her about the company. Black’s mother paid $4,000 for Ark Music to produce her daughter’s music video while the Blacks retained ownership of the master. The single, “Friday”, written entirely by Ark, was released on YouTube and iTunes. The song’s video was uploaded to YouTube on February 10, 2011, and received approximately 1,000 views in the first month. The video went viral on March 11, 2011, acquiring millions of views on YouTube in a matter of days, becoming the most-talked-about topic on social networking site Twitter, and garnering mostly negative media coverage. As of June 14, 2011, the video had received more than 3,190,000 “dislikes” on YouTube compared to more than 451,000 “likes”. As of March 22, 2011, first-week sales of her digital single were estimated to be around 40,000 by Billboard. Black appeared on the March 22, 2011 episode of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, during which she performed the single and discussed the negative reaction to it. The song has peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 and the New Zealand Singles Chart at number 58 and 33, respectively. In the UK, the song debuted at number 61 on the UK Singles Chart.

In an interview with The Sun, Black said that she is recording a new song for possible release as a single. She is currently working without a record deal. She also said that she is preparing materials for her debut album at Flying Pig Productions studio in Los Angeles containing songs with themes similar to that of “Friday”, as she wants it to be “appropriate and clean.” Black teamed up with Funny or Die on April Fools Day (the site was renamed Friday or Die) for a series of videos, including one which addresses the controversy about the driving kids in her music video, stating “We so excited about safety.” She has also stated that she is a fan of Justin Bieber, and expressed interest in performing a duet with him.

In response to the YouTube video of “Friday”, Black began to receive death threats in late February 2011, specifically by phone and email. These threats are being investigated by the Anaheim Police Department.

In March 2011, Ryan Seacrest reportedly helped sign Rebecca to manager Debra Baum’s DB Entertainment.

MTV selected Rebecca to host its first online awards show, the O Music Awards Fan Army Party in April 2011.

As a homage to “Friday”, Black appears in the music video for Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”, in which Black plays alongside Perry as the hostess of a party Perry attends.

“Friday” was also performed on the second season of Glee in the episode, “Prom Queen,” which originally aired May 10, 2011. When asked about why the song was covered on Glee, show creator Ryan Murphy replied, “The show pays tribute to pop culture and, love it or hate it, that song is pop culture.”

Black is set to release a self-produced single called My Moment on July 18, with an accompanying music video, as well as a digital 5-track EP in August.

Awards and nominations

In April 2011, the MTV O Music Awards, one of the annual awards established by MTV to honor the art, creativity, personality and technology of music into the digital space nominated “Which Seat Can I Take?” for “Favorite Animated GIF” that included footage by Rebecca Black featuring 50 Cent and Bert.

Popular culture

Black appears as herself in the music video of Katy Perry’s single “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”. She appears as the host of a party in the house next door to that of “Kathy Beth Terry”. At the end of the video Terry attempts to blame the excesses of the party (which had subsequently moved to her own house) on Black, only for her parents (Corey Feldman and Debbie Gibson) to disbelieve her.

She has since been repeatedly mentioned on the fictional Terry’s facebook and twitter pages, as well as during an in-character interview with DigitalSpy.

Britney is one of the last teenage superstars of the millennium. She was born on 2nd December, 1981 Kentwod, Louisiana, USA. She has been the First Solo Artist ever to have a number one Album and Single on the Billboard Charts at the same time with a Debut. Britney caused a stir in 1999 with the American Family Association by posing in her underwear on the cover of Rolling Stone and also fought rumours of breasts implants the same year.

In the year 2000, she again created a stir at MTV Video Music Awards by dressing up in flesh colored outfit which made her look scantily clad. She also signed a contract with Pepsi to do their T.V commercials promoting their soft drink for $10,000 million upwards in 2001. In the same year she hosted the American Music Awards.

She has also starred in the movie CrossRoads released in March 2002 which did not do exceptionally well. Around the same time she also broke up with her boyfriend Justin Timberlake. She was voted as one Fun and Fearless female by Cosmopolitan magazine and as the Fourth Most Influential Person by the People magazine. Britney is also the most searched for name on the internet. Currently, she is at work on her fourth album slated to release by October 2003.

She soon became recognized across the globe in the United States, when she appeared in the thriller, Dead Calm, 1988. As Rae Ingram, she starred as Sam Neill’s wife in Philip Noyce‘s thriller. Christina Aguilera was born December 18, 1980, in Staten Island, New York. She is the daughter of an Ecuadorian father, Fausto, and a Irish mother, Shelly. Since her father was in the military she moved around quite a bit in the initial years. Her parents separated when she was seven, and she settled with her sister and mom in Wexford, Pensylvania. Julia Fiona Robert was born in the small-townish Atlanta suburb of Smyrna, Georgia, the daughter of a vacuum salesman and a church secretary on October 28, 1967. Her parents divorced when she was 4, and her father, with whom Roberts shared a deep attachment, died of cancer when she was just 9.

Roberts grew up hanging around the theater people who attended her parents Actors and Writers Workshop in their Atlanta home. As a child she loved animals, and wanted to be a veterinarian, but she ended up studying journalism.

Starting out as a model in order to make a living, Julia also took acting classes in order to perfect her trade. She finally received her big break after her brother, B-movie actor Eric Roberts, convinced a director to cast his little sister in the film Blood Red. 2001 brought the roles in the disappointing The Mexican and America’s Sweethearts. Julia also appeared in the star-studded Ocean’s Eleven, directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Her next projects include Full Frontal, George Clooney’s directorial debut Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and 2003′s Mona Lisa Smile.

She’s been linked to Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, married and divorced Lyle Lovett, Matthew Perry and Dylan McDermott-to name a few. It looked as though Julia Roberts would be walking down the aisle with longtime love Benjamin Bratt, but the couple split in the spring of 2001 after more than three years.

She has been a dancer, an actress, and now a singer. Born in the Bronx on July 24, 1970, she always knew she wanted to be a performer, but it was her association with the Fox Network series In Living Color, as a “Fly Girl” dancer, that first gained her attention. Her dance moves, overwhelming stage presence, and soon-to-be-famous Latina curves were the stuff of talent agents’ dreams. After landing acting parts on such short-lived TV series as Fox’s South Central, CBS’s Second Chances, and Aaron Spelling’s Malibu Road, she shifted to movies, and her career took off when she eventually landed the title role in the feature film Selena, playing Selena Quintanilla Perez, the Tejano singer whose tragic murder made her an immediate icon. Jennifer Aniston was born on February 11, 1969 in Sherman Oaks, California to Nancy and John Aniston (Victor Kiriakis on Days of Our Lives). Aniston, who is Greek, spent a year of her childhood living in Greece with her family but later, moved to New York when her father landed a role on the daytime drama, Love of Life. Aniston’s parents separated when she was 9 years old. After the divorce, she was raised in New York City by her mother. She was also the goddaughter of the late Telly Savalas.

Her father’s passion for acting rubbed off on her which she finally discovered at age 11, when she joined the Rudolf Steiner School’s Drama Club. She loved the gig, and decided to train professionally. She attended New York’s High School of the performing Arts.

After her graduation in 1987, she won roles in such off-Broadway productions as For Dear Life at New York’s Public Theatre and Dancing on Checker’s Grave. But this wasn’t enough to survive so she started the job of waitress between her acting jobs. Jennifer’s agent suggested that she should lose 20-30 pounds to give the TV looks.

Paul Rudd was Aniston’s gay roommate and the object of Aniston’s affection in 1998′s The Object of My Affection, which was her first lead role, and to date her most successful among moviegoers. She most recently starred in the comedy Office Space.
