When it comes to mobile phone OS, there are only two best options to take: The Symbian and the Android. Of course, both have their own specialties and drawbacks.

The Symbian is said to be a really old OS with its first version (Symbian v9) being released way back in 2005. It also got numerous updates — with Symbian Belle as being the latest installment.

Android, on the other hand, was launched just few months before the Symbian. It was acquired by Google in 2005 and has kicked off to a different level from 2008- Android OS .

Since their release, these two OSes — along with their makers (Nokia and Google), have been trying to beat each other in terms of performance and service. Perhaps only the gamers have the ability to determine the real winner, as both aims to provide a superb gaming experience.

Here you can see a brief yet detailed comparison between the Symbian and Android OS.

OPEN/CLOSE OS

The Android is an open source but with a closed development platform; while the Symbian OS is an out-n-out open source.

FEATURES/TOOLS

Android has a wide array of features, including Application Framework, Dalvik Virtual Machine, Optimized graphic, Accelerometer, Compass, GPS, and several applications like SMS program, maps, calendar, email client, contacts, and Java programming. It also supports videos, still images, common audio files, and other complicated formats. However, Android does have a very poor support for Web games, making it quite unusable for online playing.

Meanwhile, Symbian features C++ programming. It has a high Java support, thus, giving an ultimate gaming experience to users. Symbian smoothly displays games without any buffering like in most online games. Sadly, this OS does not work well when it comes to downloading games.

USABILITY

Symbian and Android are both easy to use and provide a non-complex interface. The two OSes come with great gaming experience, but the Symbian is more preferred for online gaming.

NETWORKS

Android-powered handsets has support for wireless Internet — which means users can run Web into their phones even without having a network connection in their handsets. The Symbian OS, on the other hand, does not have an integrated network accelerator for clearer video calling. But users could download one to speed up the Web connection.

HARDWARE DIFFERENCES

The Android’s hardware interface features an autofocus camera, callback on camera error, an interface that provides image data from captured photo, geomagnetic field, and sensor. Symbian-powered smartphones, such as the Nokia N8, have been reported to attain certain glitches when opening large web files.

INTERNET

Android 2.0 now comes with Firefox Mobile Web Browser, which provides users with faster and buffer-free browsing experience. The Symbian browser, on the other hand, could only download one file at a time; but it currently supports multi window browsing.

MULTIMEDIA

Both Android and Symbian based handsets offers good multimedia features. However, images and video files appear much better on Android-powered touch screen phones.

Since the phone would run on photovoltaic charging, it could very well charge itself while it is still in use, although the designer notes that it would have a standby time of over 200 hours as well as a music player runtime of over half an hour”.

Have you ever thought about killing two birds with one stone. Particularly if it’s from Peter Vesterbacka, the CMO or the Mighty Eagle of Rovio Mobile, the Finnish company behind the Angry Birds phenomenon. At Cannes, apart from speaking at the annual ad fest, Vesterbacka was also scouting and hunting for talent.

The success rate – two short-list for the top position at Rovio. Even as he moves to the next level of talent hunt, Verterbacka takes pot-shots, aiming directly at the brands. Brands, he says, are wasting their time advertising on television. “With our reach we can provide a much better bang-for-the buck to them”.

While, one can debate the claims made by the Mighty Eagle, the fact remains Angry Birds has caught the attention of millions across the world. In a chat with BE, Vesterbacka talks about the origin of Angry Birds and the flight towards becoming an entertainment company in the time to come.

How did Rovio Mobile and Angry Birds happen?
After winning a game development competition sponsored by Nokia and HP, Niklas Hed founded a mobile game development studio in 2004 in Finland. We had developed 51 titles, before Rovio hit gold with Angry Birds.

The Angry Bird app took off in small countries first – Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, and the Czech Republic – before being featured on the front page of the UK App Store in February of 2010, where it jumped from 600th to first. Since then, the growth has been explosive – the app is number one in 79 countries, with 250 million downloads, 4 million Facebook fans, and tens of millions of views on Facebook!

What was the origin of the Birds, who have shaken the world with their anger?
Our game designer Jaakko Lisalo created a concept featuring a flock of manic birds, and something about their furious expressions was immediately appealing to the rest of the Rovio team.

The game-play hadn’t even been developed yet, but there was a feeling in the air that these birds had something special. Many of the now iconic elements associated with Angry Birds weren’t even present in the initial screen-shot and were only implemented during the development process.

To what do you attribute the success of the Angry Birds phenomenon across the globe that seems to be popular across the ages?
From the beginning, we were focused on creating a worldwide phenomenon. (We felt) There’s something inherently appealing about these birds – maybe it’s their crazed expressions, bright colors and broadly drawn features, or their hero’s quest to rescue their eggs.

Like many iconic characters, the flightless Angry Birds may appear small and vulnerable, but they are actually very powerful. Think pudgy Mario the plumber versus the monstrous Bowser , or Bugs Bunny versus the hunter Elmer Fudd. That’s a narrative that’s very appealing to all ages.

With a following, comprising of 50 million downloads and 1.2 billion hours a year consumption, what are the plans for the Birds to take them to the next level?
We have an amazing fan base. In addition to our four million fans on Facebook and our millions of views on YouTube, we get tons of pictures from fans of their homemade art, crafts, cakes, videos, musical tributes, live-action games, and clothing, as well as mountains of tweets expressing their interest and support.

This shows that people are really excited about these characters and want to engage with them more. We’re going to keep existing fans engaged while pushing into new platforms and forms of media in order to reach as many fans as possible.

We recently acquired the Finnish animation studio Kombo, and just recently we had a very exciting media announcement. David Maisel, the former chairman of Marvel Studios, will be acting as a special advisor to Rovio in order to help us develop our film and media strategy and will also serve as executive producer of future Angry Birds films. We’re ramping up our book publishing operation, and we have a cookbook of egg recipes already on the way.

As we transition into being an entertainment company, we’re going to keep releasing great new games, but we’re also going to offer many new ways of interacting with these beloved characters. Without getting into the specific details of our long-term plan, we can say that “world domination” is a good start!

How is your fan base in India? Anything specifically lined up for the Indian market?
We have a significant and growing fan base in India, and we are hoping for even more intense growth as adoption of smart phones in India increases. To thank our fans in India for their support, we’re even looking into the possibility of giving them a special treat!

SAN FRANCISCO:

Google has begun warning some users of its popular Internet search service that their computers may be infected with a virus.

Routine maintenance on one of the technology giant’s data centers revealed unusual traffic from computers infected with a form of malicious software, according to Google security engineer Damian Menscher.

The traffic was sent to Google through intermediary computer servers referred to as “proxies,” Menscher said.

Google began delivering warning notices along with search results to computers that appear infected with the virus.

“We hope that by taking steps to notify users whose traffic is coming through these proxies, we can help them update their antivirus software and remove the infections,” Menscher said in a blog post.

“We hope to use the knowledge we’ve gathered to assist as many people as possible.”

Comodo Antivirus is certainly one of the best free antivirus program available.

The Bottom Line

Avira AntiVir Personal is one of best free antivirus software programs out there for various reasons, the least of which is just because it’s free.

My favorite feature of Avira AntiVir Personal is the wide range of malware threats that it protects you from. I also like how simple the interface is and the lack of annoying “extra” software, like browser toolbars, that many free utilities like to push.

Important: Avira AntiVir Personal provides free on-access or resident protection, meaning it’s keeping an eye on things all the time. Because of this fact, Avira AntiVir Personal can completely replace any antivirus software that you might be paying for, like popular products from McAfee and Norton. Some of those programs might be offering you other services but as far as malware/virus protection is concerned, AntiVir Personal does the same job… for free.

What makes Panda Cloud Antivirus one of the best free antivirus programs is that it does its job from “the cloud” meaning the hard antivirus work that typically slows down a computer is done on computers elsewhere on the Internet, freeing up your computer to work like it should and protecting you from malware even better.

Immunet Protect FREE works on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP. You must also be connected to the Internet at all times.

digital-defender Antivirus supports Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP.

PC Tools AntiVirus Free offers basic protection against viruses and other malware. While not my favorite, AntiVirus Free is still one of the best free antivirus programs you’ll find.

PC Tools AntiVirus Free works on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP.

The biggest problems I have with PC Tools AntiVirus Free are the reminders throughout the program that there’s a not-so-free version that you should upgrade to. To be fair, you probably won’t notice it since the program runs silently in the background to protect you from viruses. I probably find it annoying because most of the features available in the upgrade are included for free in some of the higher rated best free antivirus programs above.

According to Vic Gundotra, a senior vice-president at Google, the company’s latest social networking service called Google+ Project consists of Circles, Hangouts, Sparks and Mobile.

“Online sharing needs a serious re-think, so it’s time we got started,” he wrote on the official Google blog while announcing the limited availability of the service.

In the lengthy post, Gundotra implies that sharing, or in other words, social networking as we know it on the Facebook is “awkward” or “even broken” because it doesn’t give due regard to privacy as well as doesn’t allow users to have complete control over their social circle.

According to Google, Circle will allow users to create different groups of friends or relatives. This will make sure that the information you share with one set of group doesn’t reaches the other group. Sparks will allow users to access the content in which they are interested from across the web through Google while Hangout will allow them to video or text chat with anyone willing to do so.

Google’s +Mobile will be offered through, initially only Android, smartphones so that users can share pictures taken with their phone within their Circle or post messages to their friends.

To those who are interested in trying out Google+, Gundotra said, “We’re beginning in field trial, so you may find some rough edges… and the project is by invitation only.”

The popularity and growth of Facebook, which has over 600 million users, have alarmed Google. While the company still leads in overall search market on the web, Facebook this year has become biggest player in display advertising. According to eMarketer, a research firm, Facebook has over 17% share in display advertising on the web. In comparison Google has a 12.3% market share.

Google, which came to the social networking party late, had launched Buzz in 2010. But the service failed to take off. It also tried Wave but that too failed to win many users, forcing the company to shut down the service last year.

Google Chrome is already an extremely fast and secure web browser. Armed with its exploit-thwarting sandbox, Chrome remained untested at Pwn2Own this year, while other browsers were hacked within minutes.

Still, it’s always better to bolster your defenses, and there are plenty of excellent options for doing just that in the official Google Chrome Extensions Gallery. Here’s a look at nine of them which are well worth installing

View Thru

The millions of short URLs floating around on Twitter, Facebook, and the rest of the Internet might be a convenience for some, but they can also be a big threat to your safety. Just like the Rickrolls of yesteryear, there are those who “poison” shortened URLs, hiding their malicious destinations behind a jumble of letters and numbers.

With View Thru installed, you’ll see a tooltip appear whenever you hover over a link, which includes the title of the destination page and its unshortened URL.

WebOfTrust (WOT)

WOT has been recommended for quite some time. Its community-powered ratings help surfers avoid Internet dangers through easy-to-understand color coding. Not sure if you should click that link in your Google or Bing search results? Green = go. Red = stop. Yellow = proceed with caution.

WOT even has you covered if you haplessly stumble onto a malicious site; instead of loading the page, you’ll be shown a big, blacked-out warning instead , letting you know that other WOT users have given it a big, collective thumbs down.

McAfee Site Advisor

If you don’t recognize the WOT name and aren’t sure about its ratings, you may well want to check out McAfee’s Site Advisor extension. They’ve been in the computer security business for a long time and know a thing or two about what’s safe and what isn’t.

Unlike WOT, Site Advisor doesn’t display ratings next to all the links on a page and it will only prevent access to untrusted sites — and then only when you tell it to via the extension’s options. By default, it just displays a color-coded alert icon, so I strongly recommend making the change.

LastPass

One of the most common ways that people put themselves at risk online is poor password habits. They use the same password everywhere, and they tend to choose words which are easily hackable. LastPass helps out by making it easy to create and use different strong passwords on all of the Web sites you log in to.

All you have to remember is one well-chosen master password. From there, use the built-in strong password creator and let LastPass encrypt and store your passwords on their remote servers. Don’t worry, not even LastPass staffers can decrypt your password file. They’re safe in the cloud — and probably a lot safer than if you’ve been using Chrome’s built-in password saving feature.

PasswordFail

If it’s not a weak password getting users into trouble, there’s always the possibility of bad Web programming putting people at risk. PasswordFail will notify you whenever you happen upon a site that is known to store passwords in plain text. Why is that bad? Because if anyone every gets their mitts on the database, they’ve got instant access to everyone’s logins (instead of a bunch of usernames and password hashes).

This one is as much about getting Web sites to institute better password storage and handling procedures as it is about letting you know where to tread lightly.

KB SSL Enforcer

Plenty of popular Web sites offer more secure SSL encrypted versions of their login pages, but they don’t send users there by default. If you’d prefer to see the lock icon and https:// at the start of your Omnibar, before typing your details into Facebook, Twitter, or Google (and a bunch of other sites), check out this extension.

It works via redirection, so you’ll see the plain old http:// version of a page briefly before KB SSL Enforcer loads the secure version of the page. This is a must-have extension to bolt on to your portable Google Chrome install.

Credit Card Nanny

No one wants to have a pile of unwanted credit card charges turn up on their statement. Nanny aims to prevent that from happening by alerting you to fraudulent or risky Web checkout forms that simply zap your CC details to someone’s email inbox in plain text. It’s hard to believe some Web stores still think it’s ok to operate like this in 2010, but it’s true.

TrustGuard

One other extension to keep an eye on is TrustGuard, which taps into the customer ratings at
TrustPilot.com. Think of it as WOT for Web stores. Customers submit ratings for shops, which TrustPilot then tabulates into an overall score from 0 to 10. Stores with an 8 or better get a green check.

Trust Guard takes those ratings and pops them into your Chrome Omnibar, giving you a quick heads-up about a store’s customer satisfaction. At least, it’s supposed to — I couldn’t get ratings to appear on any of the sites I tested. TrustGuard is fairly new, though, so it’s worth checking into later, especially if you do a lot of shopping online.

FlashBlock

I know Chrome’s sandbox makes it particularly tricky to exploit, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to leave one of the Web’s most used attack methods to run unquestioned. Adobe Flash is used commonly by malware thugs to perpetrate drive-by attacks on unsuspecting Web users.

By letting FlashBlock stop Flash elements in their tracks, I then have the choice to load them only on sites I trust.

Unless you’re new to the internet , you all must be very much aware of the ongoing battle between Facebook and its users over privacy issues. Specifically, as Facebook is continually resetting privacy settings which is actually pissing users off as they see their names and details strewn all over the internet.

One day, you’ll be hauled into court for something stupid (should’ve used lime, man). Suddenly, the opposition throws up a projection screen, plugs in a laptop, and pulls up your Facebook account. Six hundred drunken photos and foot-in-mouth status updates later, you find yourself in a cement square as prison’s freshest hunk of meat.

Even if you figure out your privacy settings, what’s stopping Facebook from throwing a wrench in the works? Every time the code monkeys insert a new string of code, users find all of their settings undone. Your mom would just love to see those photos of you on 4/20 at the top of her newsfeed. Oh right, reason 2A: your mom is on Facebook now.

One word: Farmville. All the time you spend on your virtual farm doing things that aren’t real could be spent at an actual job in which you make actual money; this money can then buy you a farm IRL, yield profits, and ultimately be WAY more productive than clicking on cows. Win.

Despite having 5,000 friends, you’re still alone. Facebook is no more an exercise in social skills than World of Warcraft (shh, it’ll be okay). Go outside for once and interact via Faceface, not Facebook — and don’t be frightened by the lack of links and text boxes.

As beautifully coined by South Park, “You Have 0 Friends.” Watch, learn, and repent. The internet has gone too far, but it’s not too late to escape… if you’re good at Yahtzee, anyway.

NYU students are working hard on creating an alternative to Facebook that will guarantee you privacy while still offering you all the great features of Facebook…like having “friends” and detagging ugly pictures. Stay on top of this and you can soon say you were one of the first users.

After the roaring success of Windows 7, Microsoft recently unveiled the latest version of its productivity suit, Microsoft Office 2010.

Boasting of a host of collaborative features and an all-new interface, Office 2010 aims to bring back the glory Microsoft lost with Office 2007. Not only this, the software giant also plans to take on the Web’s Big Daddy Google which offers free Web-based Google Docs.

In fact, Microsoft has completely overhauled its most-popular software offering Word which now offers improved features for search, editing and pictures.

Here is a look at 10 new features in Microsoft Word 2010.

Improved search

With the new and improved Find experience, you can now view a summary of search results in a single pane, and click to access any individual result. The improved Navigation Pane provides you a visual outline of your document so you can browse, sort and find what you need.

Co-authoring in real-time

Word 2010 redefines the way people can work together on a document. With co-authoring, you can edit papers and share ideas with others at the same time. Share Point Foundation Services or a Windows Live account is required.

You can also view the availability of others who are authoring a document with you and can start a conversation without leaving Word.

Share documents

Word 2010 lets you post your documents online and then access, view, and edit them from almost any computer or your Windows phone.

Microsoft Word Web App edits documents in a Web browser when you’re away from your office or home, without compromising the quality of your viewing experience. You can also stay current and take immediate action using an enhanced mobile version of Word specifically suited to your smartphone.

Add visual effects

With Word 2010, you can apply formatting effects such as shadow, bevel, glow, and reflection to your document text. You can spell-check text that uses visual effects, and add text effects to paragraph styles. Many of the same effects used for images are now available to both text and shapes.

Turn your text into diagram

Word 2010 offers you more options to add visual impact to your documents. You can choose from dozens of additional SmartArt Graphics to build diagrams just by typing a bulleted list. SmartArt enables you to transform basic, bullet-point text into visuals that illustrate your ideas.

Image editing

New picture-editing tools in Word 2010 enable you to add special picture effects without additional photo-editing software. You can easily adjust pictures with colour saturation and temperature controls. You also get improved tools for easier and more precise cropping and image correction.

Recover lost draft

After working on that document for awhile, did you accidentally close it without saving? Worry not. Word 2010 lets you recover draft versions of recently edited files as easily as opening any file, even if you never saved the document.

Insert screen shots

You can now capture and insert screen shots directly from Word 2010 to incorporate visual illustrations into your work. When you use a tablet-enabled device such as a Tablet PC, you get improved tools for formatting ink as easily as you format shapes.

New File menu

The new Microsoft Office Backstage view replaces the traditional File menu to let you save, share, print, and publish your documents with just a few clicks. With the improved Ribbon, you can access your favorite commands even more quickly by customizing tabs.

Word translation

Word 2010 helps you work and communicate across different languages. It translates a word, phrase, or document more easily than before. You can set separate language settings for Screen Tips, Help content, and displays. And, get additional assistance for English as a second language with English text-to-speech playback.

Number of Internet users in Asia is 5,29,701,704. Though Asia has only 16% of populations of the world, 37.6% of total internet users are Asian which is great. Of them around 60 million are from India. India is 3rd in Asia (1st is China (220 million) and 2nd is Japan (87.5 million)) and 4th in world ((1st is China (220 million), 2nd is USA (216 million) and 3rd is Japan (87.5 million)) as per as internet users are concerned.

India has 13% of internet users in Asia and 7.36% that of the world. But the sorrowful fact is only 5.3% of people in India use internet. The reason of this is most of the people in India don’t know computer. 70% of people who know computer have used internet which is a healthy sign.

Now, we will see mainly which age group and which type people use internet in India. 19-40 years age group is major section (85%) using internet in India. 85% of internet users in India are male which not a very good sign is. Among working women, only 11% use internet. The ratio is almost half (6%) in case of non-working women and even worst in case of house-wives (2%). The scenario is much better in case of young men (33%). Also 15% older men, 14% school going kids and 21% college students use internet in India. 46% of net users are graduate, 26% are post-graduate. Among these, 2/3 rd of user use internet 2-3 times a week. 62% uses internet from office as in most of the offices, it’s free.

Next, let us see from which cities most users come. Mumbai has the maximum number of internet users (3.24 million) in India followed by Delhi (2.66 million). The top ten cities where people use internets are Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Hydrabad, Ahmedabad, Surat and Nagpur. The total numbers of internet users of those 10 cities are 37% of the total numbers of internet users in India.

Now take a look which types of sites majority of users browse. Most of the users use net for emailing (95%) which is obvious. Next is job searching (73%) showing crisis of getting job in India followed by chatting sites (62%), social networking sites (51%) and quite interestingly mathematical sites (48%).

The top ten sites internet users browse in India are the following:

Yahoo

Google India

Google

Orkut

Rediff

Youtube

Blogger.com

Windows Live

Rapid Share

Wikipedia

So, briefly this is the situation of internet users in India. Though internet ownership has seen growth of 32% compare to last year which is a delighting fact, there are some concerning factors too. Those are

Only 5.3% people use internet in India which is very low.

Most of the users are male (85%). The female percentage should increase.

Maximum number of users is from top 10 cities (37%). So, the internet usage in urban areas is very less.

Most of the users are male: (85%)

Top 25 Best Ways To Speed Up Windows XP

Since defragmenting the disk won’t help you much in improve Windows XP performance,

here are some 25 suggestions that can improve the performance of your PC’s Windows XP .

To decrease a system’s boot time and increase system performance, use the money you save by not buying defragmentation software — the built-in Windows defragmenter works just fine — and instead equip the computer with an Ultra-133 or Serial ATA hard drive with 8-MB cache buffer.

If a PC has less than 512 MB of RAM, add more memory. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade that can dramatically improve system performance.

Ensure that Windows XP is utilizing the NTFS file system. If you’re not sure, here’s how to check: First, double-click the My Computer icon, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Next, examine the File System type; if it says FAT32, then back-up any important data. Next, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the prompt, type CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS and press the Enter key. This process may take a while; it’s important that the computer be uninterrupted and virus-free. The file system used by the bootable drive will be either FAT32 or NTFS. I highly recommend NTFS for its superior security, reliability, and efficiency with larger disk drives.

Disable file indexing. The indexing service extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a “searchable keyword index.” As you can imagine, this process can be quite taxing on any system.—-The idea is that the user can search for a word, phrase, or property inside a document, should they have hundreds or thousands of documents and not know the file name of the document they want. Windows XP’s built-in search functionality can still perform these kinds of searches without the Indexing service. It just takes longer. The OS has to open each file at the time of the request to help find what the user is looking for.—-Most people never need this feature of search. Those who do are typically in a large corporate environment where thousands of documents are located on at least one server. But if you’re a typical system builder, most of your clients are small and medium businesses. And if your clients have no need for this search feature, I recommend disabling it.—-Here’s how: First, double-click the My Computer icon. Next, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching.” Next, apply changes to “C: subfolders and files,” and click OK. If a warning or error message appears (such as “Access is denied”), click the Ignore All button.

Update the PC’s video and motherboard chipset drivers. Also, update and configure the BIOS. For more information on how to configure your BIOS properly, see this article on my site.

Empty the Windows Prefetch folder every three months or so. Windows XP can “prefetch” portions of data and applications that are used frequently. This makes processes appear to load faster when called upon by the user. That’s fine. But over time, the prefetch folder may become overloaded with references to files and applications no longer in use. When that happens, Windows XP is wasting time, and slowing system performance, by pre-loading them. Nothing critical is in this folder, and the entire contents are safe to delete.

Once a month, run a disk cleanup. Here’s how: Double-click the My Computer icon. Then right-click on the C: drive and select Properties. Click the Disk Cleanup button — it’s just to the right of the Capacity pie graph — and delete all temporary files.

In your Device Manager, double-click on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers device, and ensure that DMA is enabled for each drive you have connected to the Primary and Secondary controller. Do this by double-clicking on Primary IDE Channel. Then click the Advanced Settings tab. Ensure the Transfer Mode is set to “DMA if available” for both Device 0 and Device 1. Then repeat this process with the Secondary IDE Channel.

Upgrade the cabling. As hard-drive technology improves, the cabling requirements to achieve these performance boosts have become more stringent. Be sure to use 80-wire Ultra-133 cables on all of your IDE devices with the connectors properly assigned to the matching Master/Slave/Motherboard sockets. A single device must be at the end of the cable; connecting a single drive to the middle connector on a ribbon cable will cause signaling problems. With Ultra DMA hard drives, these signaling problems will prevent the drive from performing at its maximum potential. Also, because these cables inherently support “cable select,” the location of each drive on the cable is important. For these reasons, the cable is designed so drive positioning is explicitly clear.

Remove all spyware from the computer. Use free programs such as AdAware by Lavasoft or SpyBot Search & Destroy. Once these programs are installed, be sure to check for and download any updates before starting your search. Anything either program finds can be safely removed. Any free software that requires spyware to run will no longer function once the spyware portion has been removed; if your customer really wants the program even though it contains spyware, simply reinstall it. For more information on removing Spyware visit this Web Pro News page.

Remove any unnecessary programs and/or items from Windows Startup routine using the MSCONFIG utility. Here’s how: First, click Start, click Run, type MSCONFIG, and click OK. Click the StartUp tab, then uncheck any items you don’t want to start when Windows starts. Unsure what some items are? Visit the WinTasks Process Library. It contains known system processes, applications, as well as spyware references and explanations. Or quickly identify them by searching for the filenames using Google or another Web search engine.

Remove any unnecessary or unused programs from the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel.

Turn off any and all unnecessary animations, and disable active desktop. In fact, for optimal performance, turn off all animations. Windows XP offers many different settings in this area. Here’s how to do it: First click on the System icon in the Control Panel. Next, click on the Advanced tab. Select the Settings button located under Performance. Feel free to play around with the options offered here, as nothing you can change will alter the reliability of the computer — only its responsiveness.

If your customer is an advanced user who is comfortable editing their registry, try some of the performance registry tweaks offered at Tweak XP.

Visit Microsoft’s Windows update site regularly, and download all updates labeled Critical. Download any optional updates at your discretion.

Update the customer’s anti-virus software on a weekly, even daily, basis. Make sure they have only one anti-virus software package installed. Mixing anti-virus software is a sure way to spell disaster for performance and reliability.

Make sure the customer has fewer than 500 type fonts installed on their computer. The more fonts they have, the slower the system will become. While Windows XP handles fonts much more efficiently than did the previous versions of Windows, too many fonts — that is, anything over 500 — will noticeably tax the system.

Do not partition the hard drive. Windows XP’s NTFS file system runs more efficiently on one large partition. The data is no safer on a separate partition, and a reformat is never necessary to reinstall an operating system. The same excuses people offer for using partitions apply to using a folder instead. For example, instead of putting all your data on the D: drive, put it in a folder called “D drive.” You’ll achieve the same organizational benefits that a separate partition offers, but without the degradation in system performance. Also, your free space won’t be limited by the size of the partition; instead, it will be limited by the size of the entire hard drive. This means you won’t need to resize any partitions, ever. That task can be time-consuming and also can result in lost data.

Check the system’s RAM to ensure it is operating properly. I recommend using a free program called MemTest86. The download will make a bootable CD or diskette (your choice), which will run 10 extensive tests on the PC’s memory automatically after you boot to the disk you created. Allow all tests to run until at least three passes of the 10 tests are completed. If the program encounters any errors, turn off and unplug the computer, remove a stick of memory (assuming you have more than one), and run the test again. Remember, bad memory cannot be repaired, but only replaced.

If the PC has a CD or DVD recorder, check the drive manufacturer’s Web site for updated firmware. In some cases you’ll be able to upgrade the recorder to a faster speed. Best of all, it’s free.

Disable unnecessary services. Windows XP loads a lot of services that your customer most likely does not need. To determine which services you can disable for your client, visit the Black Viper site for Windows XP configurations.

If you’re sick of a single Windows Explorer window crashing and then taking the rest of your OS down with it, then follow this tip: open My Computer, click on Tools, then Folder Options. Now click on the View tab. Scroll down to “Launch folder windows in a separate process,” and enable this option. You’ll have to reboot your machine for this option to take effect.

At least once a year, open the computer’s cases and blow out all the dust and debris. While you’re in there, check that all the fans are turning properly. Also inspect the motherboard capacitors for bulging or leaks.

For Faster startup (really effective) – Open run (start – run or press windows button + r), type msconfig and press enter key. Click “startup” tab, here u can see the list of all startup programs. Uncheck most of the options that u think u don’t require and save the changes, restart and see the diffrence.

For Faster internet speed (by 20%) - Open run and type gpedit.msc then computer configuration – administrative templates – network – qos packet scheduler and open “limit reservable bandwidth”, Check enbled and type 0 in the option box below, click ok. Thats it.

The first MP3 player to hit the market was the MPMan F10, pictured above. Looking much like a set of bathroom scales and released in March of 1998, the F10 came with 32MB on board, however owners of this newfangled device were able to upgrade to 64MB simply by sending the thing back to Eiger Labs along with a cheque for approx $80. The public were slow to take to the invention.

First Ever Laptop

1981 saw the release of the Osborne 1, the world’s first portable computer. The entire thing was housed in its own case and as a result weighed a hefty 24.5lb. 64K of RAM and a 4MHz CPU were contained within, whilst a 5″ screen showed off the results. When released the Osborne1 cost $1795.

First Ever Digital Camera

Amazingly, the first ever attempt to build a digital camera occurred back in 1975 when a Kodak engineer by the name of Steven Sasson hacked together the prototype in the above photo. Using a CCD image sensor, the machine boasted a resolution of 10′000 pixels (0.01 Megapixels) and took 23 seconds to capture the black and white image and record it to cassette tape.

First Ever Cellular Phone

Motorola’s DynaTAC 8000X became the world’s first commercial handheld cellular phone back in 1983 after gaining approval from the FCC. Upon release, the phone cost an impressive $3,995 but despite the whopping price tag thousands of people joined waiting lists to get their hands on one. Its dimensions in inches were 13 x 1.75 x 3.5, it had an 8hr standby time and could store 30 numbers.

First Ever Games Console

In 1972, a whole 3 years before Atari released their extremely successful Pong console, a company by the name of Magnavox released the Odyssey, the world’s first video games console. The console used a cartridge system and was unable to produce any sound but still, it was impressive hardware for its time. Apparently the marketing department at Magnavox didn’t capitalise on the machine’s potential though, and sales dwindled.

Malware is a software that can damage or compromise a computer system without the owner’s consent.

Natalie Connor, spokeswoman of the anti-virus company, said that even visiting any of the named websites could expose a computer to infection and put the personal information into the hands of unwanted people.

“What people don’t realise is when you type in a website, you’re bringing down information on a page and with it could be malware,” News.com.au quoted her as saying.

The list was compiled with the help of global data collected on Norton Safe Web, a site that analysed websites’ security risks.

Norton released a sample of the dirtiest websites:

The infected sites had on average 18,000 threats and 40 per cent of the sites had more than 20,000 threats, while 75 per cent of websites on the list were found to be spreading malware for over six months.

According to Connor, most websites in the list had adult content with unprintable names, suggesting they contained hardcore pornography.

Some others sites include those on ice skating, deer hunting, catering and legal services.

Hackers can apparently obtain personal information using keystroke-logging software from both PCs and Mac computers.

WordPress is itself is a excellent system but you can make it into a rock solid blogging system just by adding some plugins. By Adding plugins you can have just about any functionality in your wordpress blog you can thing of it.

So here’s my list of top wordpress plugins:-

FeedBurner FeedSmith :

I use and love FeedBurner, even though it goes awry every once in a while, and the best way of using it is with FeedSmith, which I’ve been using since before it was “acquired” by FeedBurner. Just install, enter your FeedBurner ID and activate. That’s it, you’re done.

HeadSpace2 :

Anyone who has been following me for a while knows I’m a huge fan of John Godley’s plugins especially HeadSpace2 and Redirection. HeadSpace2 takes care of all my meta tags and inserts my Mint code. If you don’t need fancy things you can use it for Google Analytics and other trackers too!

Lighter Menus :

The WP 2.5 and 2.6 backend is a bit “heavy”, lighter menus turns the menu into a drop down and saves a LOT of space in the top part of the interface.

pageMash :

My site uses a lot of pages, and sometimes you want to move around some pages. The default WordPress way of doing that is hard (you have to give each page a menu order by hand) but pageMash is excellent for that, with a nice Ajaxy interface in which you can just drag and drop pages.

Redirection :

WordPress doesn’t do any 301 redirections by itself when you, for instance, change the slug of a page (the part of the URL that identifies the post). Redirection does do that for you though. You can also add your own redirects in the very user friendly admin panel, that’s why it takes care of all my redirections, and does so wonderfully.

Search Excerpt :

WordPress Search by default sucks. Fixing it takes a bit of work, but the heavy lifting is done by this plugin. If you want to know what I’ve done with this blogs search pages, read my post on improving the WordPress search function.

WordPress Automatic Upgrade :

WordPress upgrades quite often. Which is both a good thing, and a pain in the backside because of all the work involved. This plugin takes care of that, and even though I’ve heard of people having problems with this one, for me, it has always worked amazingly well. I’ve used it to upgrade all of my WordPress blogs and sites to the latest version for at least 6 months now.

WP-DBManager :

Not only is this plugin perfect for doing automated backups, it can also do things like database optimization and the admin pages for it allow you to do the occasional query from within WordPress!

WP Security Scan :

Even when you update to the latest version all the time, there’s still this slight chance of you getting hacked. WP Security Scan helps you minimize this chance by pointing you right at all the vulnerabilities in your blog.

WP Super Cache :

I can’t imagine running this site without caching, although I have it turned of 98% of the time, I do turn it on whenever I’m about to hit Digg / Reddit / StumbleUpon, and it has saved my “life” a couple of times. WordPress has a tendency of becoming slower when you make your themes more complex, and when you add a lot of plugins. This plugin allows me to still have both and keep my readers happy.

MobilePress :

While the majority of your site’s visitors will be using a normal web browser, you do want to make mobile users as happy as possible too. This plugin helps you do that, by serving up a cool interface for iPhone and iPod Touch users and other mobile phone users

The latest version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, was officially launched during a recent meeting among the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

Based off of the 802.11 protocol, Bluetooth 3.0 will increase transfer speeds from 3Mbps up to an impressive 23Mbps, according to Bluetooth supporters. The technology is based on Wi-Fi standards and offers power-saving benefits that weren’t available with Bluetooth 2.1.

“Utilizing the 802.11 radio was a natural choice as it provides efficiencies for both our members and consumers — members get more function out of the two radios they are already including in devices, and consumers with Bluetooth 3.0 HS products will get faster exchange of information without changing how they connect,” Bluetooth SIG director Michael Foley said in a statement. “We are excited to expand the possibilities of the PAN.”

During the announcement, Bluetooth 3.0 is expected to be used to help transfer large amounts of information between PCs and media devices, with wireless syncing available. Bluetooth has mainly been used by mobile phones, but the faster speeds should lead to Bluetooth adoption with more camcorders, TVs, Blu-ray players, cameras, and other consumer devices.

Even though Bluetooth 3.0 is out and about, many manufacturers are just now catching up to the Bluetooth 2.0 standard. Furthermore, no Bluetooth 3.0 devices are available on the consumer at the moment, and won’t begin shipping until Q3 this year, if that early.

Tech journalists and analysts long-anticipated the launch of Bluetooth 3.0, and have high expectations of what it will be able to do in the future. Users will be able to transfer music library, DVDs, and photos all in a matter of seconds, a Bluetooth SIG statement said last week.

Foley said there could be a handful of Bluetooth 3.0 devices in time for the 2009 holiday shopping, but officials don’t expect a significant amount of products until next year.
