When it comes to mobile phone OS, there are only two best options to take: The Symbian and the Android. Of course, both have their own specialties and drawbacks.

The Symbian is said to be a really old OS with its first version (Symbian v9) being released way back in 2005. It also got numerous updates — with Symbian Belle as being the latest installment.

Android, on the other hand, was launched just few months before the Symbian. It was acquired by Google in 2005 and has kicked off to a different level from 2008- Android OS .

Since their release, these two OSes — along with their makers (Nokia and Google), have been trying to beat each other in terms of performance and service. Perhaps only the gamers have the ability to determine the real winner, as both aims to provide a superb gaming experience.

Here you can see a brief yet detailed comparison between the Symbian and Android OS.

OPEN/CLOSE OS

The Android is an open source but with a closed development platform; while the Symbian OS is an out-n-out open source.

FEATURES/TOOLS

Android has a wide array of features, including Application Framework, Dalvik Virtual Machine, Optimized graphic, Accelerometer, Compass, GPS, and several applications like SMS program, maps, calendar, email client, contacts, and Java programming. It also supports videos, still images, common audio files, and other complicated formats. However, Android does have a very poor support for Web games, making it quite unusable for online playing.

Meanwhile, Symbian features C++ programming. It has a high Java support, thus, giving an ultimate gaming experience to users. Symbian smoothly displays games without any buffering like in most online games. Sadly, this OS does not work well when it comes to downloading games.

USABILITY

Symbian and Android are both easy to use and provide a non-complex interface. The two OSes come with great gaming experience, but the Symbian is more preferred for online gaming.

NETWORKS

Android-powered handsets has support for wireless Internet — which means users can run Web into their phones even without having a network connection in their handsets. The Symbian OS, on the other hand, does not have an integrated network accelerator for clearer video calling. But users could download one to speed up the Web connection.

HARDWARE DIFFERENCES

The Android’s hardware interface features an autofocus camera, callback on camera error, an interface that provides image data from captured photo, geomagnetic field, and sensor. Symbian-powered smartphones, such as the Nokia N8, have been reported to attain certain glitches when opening large web files.

INTERNET

Android 2.0 now comes with Firefox Mobile Web Browser, which provides users with faster and buffer-free browsing experience. The Symbian browser, on the other hand, could only download one file at a time; but it currently supports multi window browsing.

MULTIMEDIA

Both Android and Symbian based handsets offers good multimedia features. However, images and video files appear much better on Android-powered touch screen phones.

Since the phone would run on photovoltaic charging, it could very well charge itself while it is still in use, although the designer notes that it would have a standby time of over 200 hours as well as a music player runtime of over half an hour”.

Have you ever thought about killing two birds with one stone. Particularly if it’s from Peter Vesterbacka, the CMO or the Mighty Eagle of Rovio Mobile, the Finnish company behind the Angry Birds phenomenon. At Cannes, apart from speaking at the annual ad fest, Vesterbacka was also scouting and hunting for talent.

The success rate – two short-list for the top position at Rovio. Even as he moves to the next level of talent hunt, Verterbacka takes pot-shots, aiming directly at the brands. Brands, he says, are wasting their time advertising on television. “With our reach we can provide a much better bang-for-the buck to them”.

While, one can debate the claims made by the Mighty Eagle, the fact remains Angry Birds has caught the attention of millions across the world. In a chat with BE, Vesterbacka talks about the origin of Angry Birds and the flight towards becoming an entertainment company in the time to come.

How did Rovio Mobile and Angry Birds happen?
After winning a game development competition sponsored by Nokia and HP, Niklas Hed founded a mobile game development studio in 2004 in Finland. We had developed 51 titles, before Rovio hit gold with Angry Birds.

The Angry Bird app took off in small countries first – Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, and the Czech Republic – before being featured on the front page of the UK App Store in February of 2010, where it jumped from 600th to first. Since then, the growth has been explosive – the app is number one in 79 countries, with 250 million downloads, 4 million Facebook fans, and tens of millions of views on Facebook!

What was the origin of the Birds, who have shaken the world with their anger?
Our game designer Jaakko Lisalo created a concept featuring a flock of manic birds, and something about their furious expressions was immediately appealing to the rest of the Rovio team.

The game-play hadn’t even been developed yet, but there was a feeling in the air that these birds had something special. Many of the now iconic elements associated with Angry Birds weren’t even present in the initial screen-shot and were only implemented during the development process.

To what do you attribute the success of the Angry Birds phenomenon across the globe that seems to be popular across the ages?
From the beginning, we were focused on creating a worldwide phenomenon. (We felt) There’s something inherently appealing about these birds – maybe it’s their crazed expressions, bright colors and broadly drawn features, or their hero’s quest to rescue their eggs.

Like many iconic characters, the flightless Angry Birds may appear small and vulnerable, but they are actually very powerful. Think pudgy Mario the plumber versus the monstrous Bowser , or Bugs Bunny versus the hunter Elmer Fudd. That’s a narrative that’s very appealing to all ages.

With a following, comprising of 50 million downloads and 1.2 billion hours a year consumption, what are the plans for the Birds to take them to the next level?
We have an amazing fan base. In addition to our four million fans on Facebook and our millions of views on YouTube, we get tons of pictures from fans of their homemade art, crafts, cakes, videos, musical tributes, live-action games, and clothing, as well as mountains of tweets expressing their interest and support.

This shows that people are really excited about these characters and want to engage with them more. We’re going to keep existing fans engaged while pushing into new platforms and forms of media in order to reach as many fans as possible.

We recently acquired the Finnish animation studio Kombo, and just recently we had a very exciting media announcement. David Maisel, the former chairman of Marvel Studios, will be acting as a special advisor to Rovio in order to help us develop our film and media strategy and will also serve as executive producer of future Angry Birds films. We’re ramping up our book publishing operation, and we have a cookbook of egg recipes already on the way.

As we transition into being an entertainment company, we’re going to keep releasing great new games, but we’re also going to offer many new ways of interacting with these beloved characters. Without getting into the specific details of our long-term plan, we can say that “world domination” is a good start!

How is your fan base in India? Anything specifically lined up for the Indian market?
We have a significant and growing fan base in India, and we are hoping for even more intense growth as adoption of smart phones in India increases. To thank our fans in India for their support, we’re even looking into the possibility of giving them a special treat!

With the new and improved Find experience, you can now view a summary of search results in a single pane, and click to access any individual result. The improved Navigation Pane provides you a visual outline of your document so you can browse, sort and find what you need.

Co-authoring in real-time

Word 2010 redefines the way people can work together on a document. With co-authoring, you can edit papers and share ideas with others at the same time. Share Point Foundation Services or a Windows Live account is required.

You can also view the availability of others who are authoring a document with you and can start a conversation without leaving Word.

Share documents

Word 2010 lets you post your documents online and then access, view, and edit them from almost any computer or your Windows phone.

Microsoft Word Web App edits documents in a Web browser when you’re away from your office or home, without compromising the quality of your viewing experience. You can also stay current and take immediate action using an enhanced mobile version of Word specifically suited to your smartphone.

Add visual effects

With Word 2010, you can apply formatting effects such as shadow, bevel, glow, and reflection to your document text. You can spell-check text that uses visual effects, and add text effects to paragraph styles. Many of the same effects used for images are now available to both text and shapes.

Turn your text into diagram

Word 2010 offers you more options to add visual impact to your documents. You can choose from dozens of additional SmartArt Graphics to build diagrams just by typing a bulleted list. SmartArt enables you to transform basic, bullet-point text into visuals that illustrate your ideas.

Image editing

New picture-editing tools in Word 2010 enable you to add special picture effects without additional photo-editing software. You can easily adjust pictures with colour saturation and temperature controls. You also get improved tools for easier and more precise cropping and image correction.

Recover lost draft

After working on that document for awhile, did you accidentally close it without saving? Worry not. Word 2010 lets you recover draft versions of recently edited files as easily as opening any file, even if you never saved the document.

Insert screen shots

You can now capture and insert screen shots directly from Word 2010 to incorporate visual illustrations into your work. When you use a tablet-enabled device such as a Tablet PC, you get improved tools for formatting ink as easily as you format shapes.

New File menu

The new Microsoft Office Backstage view replaces the traditional File menu to let you save, share, print, and publish your documents with just a few clicks. With the improved Ribbon, you can access your favorite commands even more quickly by customizing tabs.

Word translation

Word 2010 helps you work and communicate across different languages. It translates a word, phrase, or document more easily than before. You can set separate language settings for Screen Tips, Help content, and displays. And, get additional assistance for English as a second language with English text-to-speech playback.

The latest version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, was officially launched during a recent meeting among the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

Based off of the 802.11 protocol, Bluetooth 3.0 will increase transfer speeds from 3Mbps up to an impressive 23Mbps, according to Bluetooth supporters. The technology is based on Wi-Fi standards and offers power-saving benefits that weren’t available with Bluetooth 2.1.

“Utilizing the 802.11 radio was a natural choice as it provides efficiencies for both our members and consumers — members get more function out of the two radios they are already including in devices, and consumers with Bluetooth 3.0 HS products will get faster exchange of information without changing how they connect,” Bluetooth SIG director Michael Foley said in a statement. “We are excited to expand the possibilities of the PAN.”

During the announcement, Bluetooth 3.0 is expected to be used to help transfer large amounts of information between PCs and media devices, with wireless syncing available. Bluetooth has mainly been used by mobile phones, but the faster speeds should lead to Bluetooth adoption with more camcorders, TVs, Blu-ray players, cameras, and other consumer devices.

Even though Bluetooth 3.0 is out and about, many manufacturers are just now catching up to the Bluetooth 2.0 standard. Furthermore, no Bluetooth 3.0 devices are available on the consumer at the moment, and won’t begin shipping until Q3 this year, if that early.

Tech journalists and analysts long-anticipated the launch of Bluetooth 3.0, and have high expectations of what it will be able to do in the future. Users will be able to transfer music library, DVDs, and photos all in a matter of seconds, a Bluetooth SIG statement said last week.

Foley said there could be a handful of Bluetooth 3.0 devices in time for the 2009 holiday shopping, but officials don’t expect a significant amount of products until next year.
