After the roaring success of Windows 7, Microsoft recently unveiled the latest version of its productivity suit, Microsoft Office 2010.

Boasting of a host of collaborative features and an all-new interface, Office 2010 aims to bring back the glory Microsoft lost with Office 2007. Not only this, the software giant also plans to take on the Web’s Big Daddy Google which offers free Web-based Google Docs.

In fact, Microsoft has completely overhauled its most-popular software offering Word which now offers improved features for search, editing and pictures.

Here is a look at 10 new features in Microsoft Word 2010.

Improved search

With the new and improved Find experience, you can now view a summary of search results in a single pane, and click to access any individual result. The improved Navigation Pane provides you a visual outline of your document so you can browse, sort and find what you need.

Co-authoring in real-time

Word 2010 redefines the way people can work together on a document. With co-authoring, you can edit papers and share ideas with others at the same time. Share Point Foundation Services or a Windows Live account is required.

You can also view the availability of others who are authoring a document with you and can start a conversation without leaving Word.

Share documents

Word 2010 lets you post your documents online and then access, view, and edit them from almost any computer or your Windows phone.

Microsoft Word Web App edits documents in a Web browser when you’re away from your office or home, without compromising the quality of your viewing experience. You can also stay current and take immediate action using an enhanced mobile version of Word specifically suited to your smartphone.

Add visual effects

With Word 2010, you can apply formatting effects such as shadow, bevel, glow, and reflection to your document text. You can spell-check text that uses visual effects, and add text effects to paragraph styles. Many of the same effects used for images are now available to both text and shapes.

Turn your text into diagram

Word 2010 offers you more options to add visual impact to your documents. You can choose from dozens of additional SmartArt Graphics to build diagrams just by typing a bulleted list. SmartArt enables you to transform basic, bullet-point text into visuals that illustrate your ideas.

Image editing

New picture-editing tools in Word 2010 enable you to add special picture effects without additional photo-editing software. You can easily adjust pictures with colour saturation and temperature controls. You also get improved tools for easier and more precise cropping and image correction.

Recover lost draft

After working on that document for awhile, did you accidentally close it without saving? Worry not. Word 2010 lets you recover draft versions of recently edited files as easily as opening any file, even if you never saved the document.

Insert screen shots

You can now capture and insert screen shots directly from Word 2010 to incorporate visual illustrations into your work. When you use a tablet-enabled device such as a Tablet PC, you get improved tools for formatting ink as easily as you format shapes.

New File menu

The new Microsoft Office Backstage view replaces the traditional File menu to let you save, share, print, and publish your documents with just a few clicks. With the improved Ribbon, you can access your favorite commands even more quickly by customizing tabs.

Word translation

Word 2010 helps you work and communicate across different languages. It translates a word, phrase, or document more easily than before. Nokia has launched its most affordable 3G handset in the country earlier today with the launch of the Nokia 2730 Classic.

The phone, priced at just Rs. 4499, comes loaded with a host of features rarely seen on a device in is price range. The 2730 Classic packs in Ovi Mail, Nokia Messaging, Nokia Life Tools, and full HTML browsing as well. It also comes with Opera Mini preloaded.

The 2730 Classic has a 2-inch QVGA display that can display 262k colours.
At just 88grams, the phone is quite light-weight.
As expected, it runs Nokia’s S40 interface.
The 30 MB of internal memory can be augmented using a microSD card and the phone comes with a 1GB card – preloaded.
It offers a maximum of 7.4 hours talk time and 16.5 days standby time.
Music lovers on a budget can rejoice – thanks to the 3.5mm slot this one comes with.
If that wasn’t all, there is Bluetooth and microUSB support as well.

There is a decent 2 megapixel camera at the rear that should be good enough for casual imaging. Along with 3G, it also supports class 32 EDGE – making it a good device for browsing while on the move. There’s FM Radio with RDS as well.

The 2730 Classic should make a decent buy for a feature packed, cheap first phone.

Bluetooth 3.0 officially launched

The latest version of Bluetooth, Bluetooth 3.0 + HS, was officially launched during a recent meeting among the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

Based off of the 802.11 protocol, Bluetooth 3.0 will increase transfer speeds from 3Mbps up to an impressive 23Mbps, according to Bluetooth supporters. The technology is based on Wi-Fi standards and offers power-saving benefits that weren’t available with Bluetooth 2.1.

“Utilizing the 802.11 radio was a natural choice as it provides efficiencies for both our members and consumers — members get more function out of the two radios they are already including in devices, and consumers with Bluetooth 3.0 HS products will get faster exchange of information without changing how they connect,” Bluetooth SIG director Michael Foley said in a statement. “We are excited to expand the possibilities of the PAN.”

During the announcement, Bluetooth 3.0 is expected to be used to help transfer large amounts of information between PCs and media devices, with wireless syncing available. Bluetooth has mainly been used by mobile phones, but the faster speeds should lead to Bluetooth adoption with more camcorders, TVs, Blu-ray players, cameras, and other consumer devices.

Even though Bluetooth 3.0 is out and about, many manufacturers are just now catching up to the Bluetooth 2.0 standard. Furthermore, no Bluetooth 3.0 devices are available on the consumer at the moment, and won’t begin shipping until Q3 this year, if that early.

Tech journalists and analysts long-anticipated the launch of Bluetooth 3.0, and have high expectations of what it will be able to do in the future. Users will be able to transfer music library, DVDs, and photos all in a matter of seconds, a Bluetooth SIG statement said last week.

Foley said there could be a handful of Bluetooth 3.0 devices in time for the 2009 holiday shopping, but officials don’t expect a significant amount of products until next year.
