World’s Cheapest Android Tablet – Aakash Launched

Priced at about Rs 1700 ($35), the Indian government on Wednesday will launch world’ cheapest tablet – Aakash. The low cost tablet is developed by the Indian Institute of Technology.
The low cost tablet is primarily meant for educational purposes and is expected to feature android OS (2.2 (Froyo)) along with wi-fi connectivity. It may also feature a 2GB SD memory card with a mini and full USB port, a 32 GB expandable memory slot, a miniSD card and a SIM card slot.

The tablet is developed as a part of the National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology that aims to link 25,000 colleges and 400 universities for an e-learning programme.
The device is expected to give some of the more costly tablet computers a tough competition as it will also PDF reader, video conferencing functioning, , sci-lab, media player, remote device management capability, multimedia input-output interface option, and multiple content viewer.
Speaking at an award ceremony held in New Delhi by the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) last month, Communications and Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal had said that the tablet would help children go beyond the boundary of classroom and teachers to acquire knowledge through IT.
Soon, a 35 dollar computer will be made available to every child in school. The tablet shall help enhance the quality of learning of children…This is not just a dream, it is a reality.
